Does Sugaring Hurt? The Natural, Low-Discomfort Alternative to Waxing

“Beauty is pain” is a frequent trope in the world of aesthetics, and frankly, we disagree. You shouldn’t have to endure constant shaving and burning wax to enjoy smooth, supple, hair-free skin. Luckily, sugaring offers an alternative solution to waxing with less pain and all the perks. But does sugaring hurt? Join us to learn more about this comfortable epilation method!

Is sugaring painful?

We get this question all the time, but the answer depends on a number of factors, including:

What to expect with body sugaring

During your sugaring service, your hair removal expert will warm up a small amount of sugar paste in her hands and apply it at body temperature. Unlike wax, sugar paste is applied against the natural direction of hair growth and quickly pulled away in the direction of growth. This method minimizes the risk of breakage and ingrown hairs.

What factors affect how painful sugaring is?

Your personal pain tolerance, chosen treatment area, and your previous epilation experience can all impact the overall discomfort of your sugaring session. Many people who’ve spent years waxing intimate areas often say that sugaring offers a gentle alternative, while those used to shaving may find the sensation more surprising.

While the experience may feel painful at first, most clients say they quickly adjust to this discomfort, and the results are worth it!

Is sugaring more painful than waxing?

In most cases, no, sugaring is not more painful than waxing. In fact, many of our clients keep coming back for sugaring sessions because they offer the same long-lasting results without the discomfort of hot wax.

How to prepare for your sugaring appointment

Ready to schedule your first sugaring appointment? Here’s how to prep for your first sugaring appointment to get the best results:

Grow out your hair

As with waxing, you’ll need to grow out the hair in your chosen treatment area to around a quarter-inch in length. Any shorter, and the paste won’t effectively remove each strand.

Any longer, and you can risk unnecessary tugging and pulling that can cause pain and lead to breakage. Many clients schedule follow-up appointments every six weeks to allow plenty of time for adequate hair growth.

Exfoliate before your appointment

Exfoliating in the weeks leading up to your session will help the paste adhere to hair rather than dead skin cells, but you’ll want to lay off on the scrubs beginning about 24 hours before your session to avoid adverse reactions.

Arrive to your appointment with clean skin

Topical products can create a barrier on the skin and hair that makes sugaring less effective, and dirt, oils, and bacteria present can increase the risk of infection and other complications. For optimal results, take a shower before your session and avoid lotions, creams, and even deodorant in your chosen treatment area.

Take an OTC pain medication right before your appointment

Folks with sensitive skin can help ensure a comfortable sugaring experience by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever just before their appointment.

Follow proper sugaring aftercare

Your treatment specialist will offer specific aftercare guidelines to make the recovery process a breeze. Avoid harsh active ingredients, direct sunlight, and excessive heat for about 48 hours after your session. Your freshly sugared skin will thank you!

Why choose sugaring over waxing?

So, what’s the difference between sugaring and waxing? Is one really better than the other? We think the answer is yes! Here are a few reasons sugaring reigns supreme:

Less painful

An experienced sugaring pro can quickly and easily eliminate unwanted hair with the flick of a wrist. Even intimate sugaring in sensitive areas like the pubic area, bikini line, underarms, and face, a highly trained expert can gently remove stubborn strands with little discomfort.

Gentle on sensitive skin

It’s true that most clients with sensitive skin will naturally experience more pain during a sugaring session than those with thicker skin. After all, this process pulls out hairs at the root. Still, sugaring is regarded as a gentle alternative to wax. When you consider that it can leave you hair-free for weeks at a time without irritating razor burn or hot, sticky wax, it’s an option worth considering, at the very least!

All-natural ingredients

Sugaring is an ancient technique using natural ingredients like sugar, lemon, and water to remove unwanted hair from the face and body. On the contrary, hair removal wax can contain a wide variety of synthetic resins, oils, or fillers that may cause sensitivity and adverse reactions.

If you have any known allergies, have your treatment specialist perform a patch test to ensure the sugaring solution doesn’t hurt.
